The East Tawas Fire Department is located on Michigan's sunrise side, 60 miles north of Bay City, and 60 miles south of Alpena. The department responds to approximately 120 emergency calls per year. All calls are dispatched by the Iosco County Central Dispatch center. The department's coverage area is 50 square miles, which includes the City of East Tawas, Baldwin Township, and 15 sections of Wilber Township. The official population of the coverage area is about 5,000, but that number swells greatly during the summer months due to tourism.

The East Tawas Fire Department has three specialized groups of firefighters, including a Confined Space team, a High Angle Rescue team, and several Medical First Responders who assist Iosco County EMS when requested.

Each year the department looks back and honors a fallen firefighter, Thomas Dillon. Firefighter Dillon was killed in the line of duty on May 6, 1970 when the brakes on the tanker he was driving failed. The tanker rolled over at the end of Newman Street, crushing the cab with firefighter Dillon inside.
